Walk A Campus in My Shoes: A Refugee Journey | A public awareness campaign At UChicago
UChicago PARR has brought the "Walk a Campus in My Shoes: A Refugee Journey" poster series to the center of campus. This series is part of a public awareness campaign that seeks to educate students - and community members - about the refugee crisis. These posters provide basic information about refugees as well as the vetting and assimilation processes.An interactive map by UNHCR with information on refugee organizations and community events can be found here.Images of several of the posters can be found below. Fact: Refugee Camp: Refugees flee their country of origin to a relatively safe neighboring country or refugee camp. One in three refugees live in a refugee camp.Fact: Interview: Refugees entering the U.S. are interviewed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Up until 2017, the U.S. welcomed 50,000-70,000 refugees every year.Fact: Arrival: Each arriving refugee is assigned to an agency to provide basic services during his or her first 90 days in the U.S. Refugees come to the U.S. on a travel loan that they must repay.Migration in Chicago
An opportunity for students to meet Chicago area practitioners and advocates to discuss US immigration policy from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Students also received tips about career paths in policy analysis and advocacy. View photos here.
